A brown wave of riparian woodland mortality following groundwater declines during the 2012–2019 California drought

چکیده
Abstract As droughts become more frequent and severe under anthropogenic climate change, water stress due to diminished subsurface supplies may threaten the health function of semi-arid riparian woodlands, which are assumed be largely groundwater dependent. To better support management woodlands changing climatic conditions, it is essential understand sensitivity depth (DTG) across space time. In this study, we examined six stands woodland along 28 km Santa Clara River in southern California. Combining remote sensing data fractional land cover, based on spectral mixture analysis, with historical data, assessed changes response DTG during unprecedented 2012–2019 California drought. We observed a coherent ‘brown wave’ tree mortality, characterized by decreases healthy vegetation cover increases dead/woody progressed downstream through corridor between 2012 2016. also found consistent, significant relationships separately indicating that deteriorated predictable fashion as table declined at different sites times. Based these findings, conclude brown wave dieback was likely caused local associated propagation precipitation deficits into depleted shallow alluvial aquifer. These factors suggest strongly dependent availability, turn sensitive forcing.

Groundwater nitrate following installation of a vegetated riparian buffer.
Substantial questions remain about the time required for groundwater nitrate to be reduced below 10 mg L(-1) following establishment of vegetated riparian buffers. The objective of this study was to document changes in groundwater nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations that occurred within a few years of planting a riparian buffer. In 2000 and 2001 a buffer was planted adjacent to a first-orde...
متن کاملWoodland recovery following drought-induced tree mortality across an environmental stress gradient.
Recent droughts and increasing temperatures have resulted in extensive tree mortality across the globe. Understanding the environmental controls on tree regeneration following these drought events will allow for better predictions of how these ecosystems may shift under a warmer, drier climate. Within the widely distributed piñon-juniper woodlands of the southwestern USA, a multiyear drought in...

متن کاملDecline in alkali meadow vegetation cover in California: the effects of groundwater extraction and drought
1. Throughout arid regions of the world, groundwater is extracted for human population centres. In the Great Basin and Range region of the USA, we lack basic information regarding some plant communities detailing the extent to which vegetation is threatened by groundwater extraction. This is particularly true for alkali meadow vegetation, which is restricted to zones of shallow groundwater yet ...
